This private garden tour of Holland combines private touring of the country’s cultural highlights and in-depth explorations of the best gardens in the Netherlands. It features visits to flower fields (in season), botanical gardens, castles, historic estates and the private gardens of renowned landscape architects.

Begin in Amsterdam, the capital of the Netherlands and one of the most charming cities in Europe. During private, insider-led touring, enjoy a cruise through Amsterdam’s famous canals; tour world-renowned museums such as the Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum; and visit the most interesting neighborhoods to see our favorite markets, courtyard gardens, gabled houses, canals, bridges and backstreets. Also tour historic houses that evoke the Dutch Golden Age, such as Museum Van Loon, the home of a co-founder of the Dutch East India Company. Other options include visiting the Dutch Resistance Museum and other Jewish sites, seeing interesting contemporary architecture, touring a small local brewery, enjoying the Heineken Experience, shopping for antiques, and dining on culinary treats such as rijsttafel (“rice table”), an Indonesian-influenced meal of many small dishes that’s served in specialty restaurants throughout Amsterdam.

Just outside the city, see the bustling Aalsmeer flower auction, and stroll among thousands of colorful tulips, hyacinths and other flowers in the beautiful gardens of the Keukenhof (mid-March to mid-May).

One day, take a private excursion to Leiden, Rembrandt’s hometown, to visit highlights such as the historic center, the garden courtyards of almshouses and the Hortus Botanicus, the University of Leiden’s botanical garden, which was founded in 1590 and contains plants from around the world. Continue to the charming historic center of Delft, where Johannes Vermeer lived. Explore backstreets and antiques shops, and visit the Royal Dutch Delftware Manufactory (Royal Delft).

Next, transfer to northern Holland and the town of Groningen. En route, pass colorful fields of bulb flowers (in season); tour the medieval center of Alkmaar, a cheese town; and see a garden that preserves heirloom bulbs, including tulips, daffodils and hyacinths. In Groningen, tour the medieval old town and the Groninger Museum, an eye-catching art complex. One day, take a private excursion with a specialist guide to some of the area’s best gardens, such as Hortus Haren, a botanical garden with Chinese, Celtic and other gardens; Prinsentuin, a Renaissance-style garden; and Menkemaborg, a historic manor house and gardens.

Continue to the Gelderland countryside with touring of modern and aquatic gardens en route. Spend two nights in a former castle surrounded by acres of landscaped gardens. Tour the Kroller-Muller Museum—an acclaimed art institution in the middle of a national park—and Paleis Het Loo, a 17th-century royal palace with extensive formal gardens.

En route to Maastricht, tour gardens such as the private garden of Piet Oudolf and De Tuinen van Appeltern, which has over 200 model gardens. In Maastricht, a beautiful city dating from Roman times, tour ancient monuments, medieval backstreets, market squares and ramparts of the historic center. Visit the Basilica of Saint Servatius, a popular pilgrimage church, and the fascinating caves of Sint-Pietersberg, a centuries-old stone quarry. Take an excursion to the Limburg area to visit historic estates and castles. Additional options include touring the Bonnefanten Museum and tasting Dutch wine at a nearby wine estate.

Return to Amsterdam for a final night. En route, visit Utrecht, a lively university town. Walk along the canals, browse outdoor markets, and tour landmarks such as the Domkerk cathedral and Rietveld Schroder House, a Modernist masterpiece and UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Artisans of Leisure can also arrange private excursions to Haarlem and cheese-producing towns like Edam or Gouda, as well as special interest activities such as attending a performance at the Concertgebouw, biking through the city or countryside, and touring museums with an art expert.

This tour can easily be extended to include destinations in Belgium, Germany, France and other countries.
