Oslo, Bergen, Sognefjord (Aurlandsfjord and Naeroyfjord), Flam, Loen, Briksdal Glacier, Geiranger, Alesund
Experience the best of Norway on this extensive private tour. Among the many unforgettable activities are cruising several of Norway's most beautiful fjords, riding the legendary Flamsbana train, seeing massive glaciers and spectacular waterfalls, visiting an ancient stave church, traveling by private vehicle on the most scenic roads, and touring the cultural highlights of Oslo, Bergen and Alesund with your private guide.
Begin in Oslo, the attractive seaside capital of Norway. During flexible private touring, learn about Viking customs at the Viking Ship Museum, marvel at the remarkable sculptures in Vigeland Park, see fascinating murals describing Norwegian history and customs inside City Hall, take in panoramic views of the harbor from the historic Akershus Fortress, walk on the roof of the iconic Opera House, and peruse masterpieces by Edvard Munch and other Norwegian artists at the National Gallery. Other options include visiting the Nobel Peace Center, learning about rural traditions at the Norwegian Folk Museum, touring the Royal Palace or Oscarshall, delving into the life of one of Norway's most renowned playwrights at the Ibsen Museum, seeing Norwegian modernist architecture at Villa Stenersen, learning about the World War II history of Norway at the Holocaust Museum or Resistance Museum, visiting Holmenkollen ski jump and the Ski Museum, and biking along the Akerselva River. Upon request, Artisans of Leisure can also arrange tickets to performances at the Oslo Opera House and other venues around the city.
Travel overland with your private guide and driver through the wild tundra of Hardangervidda National Park and past spectacular Voringfossen waterfall to Bergen, a historic port city and the gateway to Fjord Norway. During private touring in Bergen, explore the picturesque Bryggen wharf district, a former Hanseatic trading post that's now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the bustling fish market, and tour the Hanseatic Museum and Schotstuene to learn about life in medieval Bergen. Walk through the pretty backstreets of the town, and venture up the Floibanen funicular for panoramic views of Bergen and the harbor from the top of Mount Floyen. Other options include shopping for local handicrafts and delving deeper into the city's history at Rosenkrantz Tower and the Bryggens Museum. Upon request, Artisans of Leisure can arrange optional excursions to Troldhaugen (Edvard Grieg's home), Old Bergen or the Bergen Aquarium, as well as reservations at top restaurants or tickets to performances at Grieg Hall and other venues around Bergen.
Next, travel with your private guide through some of Norway's most iconic mountain and fjord scenery. Ride the renowned Flamsbana train on one of the world's most scenic rail journeys through a glacier-carved valley past small farms, tumbling waterfalls and high peaks. Cruise the most dramatic sections of beautiful Sognefjord, including scenic Aurlandsfjord and breathtaking Naeroyfjord, the narrowest fjord in Norway and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stay in the fjord-side village of Flam, surrounded by views of mountains, waterfalls and Aurlandsfjord.
With your private guide and driver, pass along the edges of fjords and through U-shaped valleys to the town of Loen. En route, tour Borgund Stave Church, one of the best-preserved medieval wooden churches in Norway, and see traditional Norwegian wooden houses in the village of Laerdal.
At Briksdal Glacier, take in views of the glacier hanging over the mountains, and see waterfalls and lakes fed by glacial meltwater. Continue to the village of Geiranger, stopping at Dalsnibba viewpoint (time permitting) for panoramas over the mountains and a bird's-eye view into Geirangerfjord thousands of feet below. Depending on timing, perhaps visit the Norwegian Fjord Center or explore the waterfall walk in Geiranger.
One day, enjoy a full-day excursion through spectacular Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the surrounding region. While cruising through the fjord, look for farm buildings perched on precipitous cliffs and admire waterfalls streaming hundreds of feet down the high rock walls. Then, continue by car and ferry among the scenic hills and fjords, and see a different side of Geirangerfjord from the famous Eagle Road. Later in the afternoon, perhaps relax with appointments at the hotel spa.
Finally, travel on Trollstigen, a dramatic road that winds down steep slopes past waterfalls and towering peaks, to Alesund, a town of Art Nouveau architecture built on islands in the Atlantic Ocean. During private touring, explore the town's backstreets and water views.
This tour can easily be extended to include other destinations in the region, such as Sweden, Denmark and other parts of northern Europe. Contact one of our Scandinavia specialists to start planning.
