Experience Our Botswana

Our customized, private insider tours of Botswana feature our favorite places and experiences in the country.

Best kept secret...

Botswana has the second largest migration in Africa (after Kenya and Tanzania). Over 30,000 Burchell’s zebra and blue wildebeest migrate across the Kalahari Desert after the first rain falls.

Must stay…

Mombo Camp on Chief’s Island in the Okavango Delta’s Moremi Game Reserve is consistently rated one of the top safari experiences in the world. It offers outstanding wildlife viewing in pristine landscapes.

Water versus land…

Botswana offers the unique experience of staying at a water-based safari camp where wildlife excursions are done by boat and mokoro (canoe). This combines well with traditional land-based game drives in other areas of Botswana. Some camps even have both land and water activities.

Fun fact…

The lines you see in the waterways of the Okavango Delta are called “hippo highways.” The natural channels are created by hippos as they cross the delta searching for food.

Experiencing the local culture…

We love Jack’s Camp, a 1940’s-style camp in the Makgadikgadi Pans of the Kalahari Desert. A unique feature of a stay at Jack’s is the opportunity to learn about the culture and desert survival skills of local San people during a walking safari with Zu/’hoasi Bushmen.

Consider…

A private helicopter excursion over the Okavango Delta.

Our favorite birds in Botswana…

The lilac-breasted roller and carmine bee-eater are such colorful and strikingly beautiful birds.

Adventure activities…

Ride ATVs across the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, go horseback riding in the Kalahari Desert, or visit Abu Elephant Camp.

Favorite way to end the day…

Sundowner cocktails in the bush followed by a gourmet meal back at camp.

Most memorable nature experience…

Spend the morning with a family of meerkats habituated to humans. It’s an amazing experience to get so close to these little creatures.

Beyond traditional camps…

Consider spending a few days on a mobile safari in Chobe National Park or a river safari on the Zambezi Queen with wildlife-viewing excursions by boat.

Insider safari tip…

Pack light! Most light aircraft flights to safari camps have very limited space for luggage. Keep in mind that our preferred luxury camps provide toiletries and laundry service so you won’t need to bring a lot with you. Artisans of Leisure also arranges private flight charters (with more luggage space), as well as luggage delivery and storage as required.

Breathtaking moment…

We love watching herds of elephants traverse the floodplains while relaxing in a private pool at Vumbura Plains. Simply stunning.
