This private luxury tour of Scotland features the highlights of the country with a focus on sites and filming locations used in the popular Outlander book and TV series. Enjoy private touring with an expert guide who knows Scotland and Outlander in depth, and stay at Scotland’s most luxurious hotels and resorts.
Begin in Edinburgh, the stunning capital of Scotland, with three nights in a sophisticated city hotel. During flexible touring with your private guide, explore the city according to your interests. Tour the Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, including iconic Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile (the road leading from the castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse) and sites related to the Outlander book and TV series. Explore historic buildings and narrow closes (alleys) and stairways that connect different levels of the city. Visit shops specializing in fine Scottish products such as woven textiles and wool tweed. Depending on your interests, you might like to visit the Royal Botanic Garden or the National Gallery, tour the Scottish Parliament Building, or hike an extinct volcano for a panoramic overview of Edinburgh and the nearby Firth of Forth bay. One day, enjoy an excursion outside the city to visit Outlander filming sites such as Midhope Castle (Lallybroch), Hopetoun House (Lord Sandringham’s house), Linlithgow Palace (Wentworth Prison) and Culross (Cranesmuir).
Next, transfer to the Scottish Highlands with touring en route. Visit Stirling, a strategic town on the edge of the Highlands that played an important role in the battles for Scottish independence. Tour Stirling Castle, which perches on a rocky outcrop and has panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. Also see the National Wallace Monument, a landmark dedicated to one of Scotland’s greatest heroes. Visit Doune Castle, the filming location of Castle Leoch in the Outlander TV series. Continue through the breathtaking scenery of Rannoch Moor and Glen Coe, one of the most beautiful regions in the Highlands.
Stay three nights just outside Fort William. One day, enjoy a private excursion through the Great Glen to Inverness, passing through classic Highlands scenery of narrow lochs and rugged mountains. Enjoy a cruise on Loch Ness, and perhaps scan the waters for Nessie, the elusive Loch Ness monster. Also visit the historic ruins of Urquhart Castle, one of the largest castles in Scotland, which sits on the shore of Loch Ness. Outside Inverness, tour the site of the Battle of Culloden, and visit the Balnuaran of Clava (also known as Clava Cairns), a stone circle similar to the one that transports Claire in Outlander. Another day, visit additional Outlander sites near Inverness, such as Beauly Priory, the traditional burial place of the Frasers of Lovat, and Castle Leod, an inspiration for the fictional Castle Leoch in Outlander. Depending on your travel dates, Artisans of Leisure can arrange for a private tour of Castle Leod with the Earl of Cromartie, Chief of Clan Mackenzie, whose family has lived there for centuries. Another option is visiting the Highland Folk Museum, an open-air museum with a 1700s-era Highland township of thatched-roof houses that will look familiar to Outlander fans, and the nearby Tulloch Ghru woodlands.
Next, transfer back through the Highlands, stopping at scenic spots such as Dunalastair Estate (an Outlander filming location) and whisky distilleries en route. Stay three nights at Gleneagles, a luxury resort on 850 acres in the rolling hills of the Perthshire countryside. One day, enjoy a private excursion to Falkland, a charming village used as a stand-in for 1940s Inverness in the Outlander TV series, and Drummond Castle, whose gardens served as the Gardens of Versailles in the show. There will also be ample free time to enjoy Gleneagles and its many leisure activities. If desired, Artisans of Leisure can arrange additional touring and activities, such as a private excursion to nearby St. Andrews, a charming seaside university town and the birthplace of golf, or to Glasgow for touring of additional Outlander sites or cultural highlights such as renowned art collections and Charles Rennie Mackintosh architecture.
This private Outlander tour of Scotland can be customized to include time in England or Ireland.
