Journey Through Jordan

(10 Days – Departs Daily on a Private Basis)
Amman, Jerash, King’s Highway, Petra, Wadi Rum, Aqaba, Dead Sea

The ultimate private Jordan tour, this incredible itinerary features private touring of the cultural and scenic highlights throughout the country, including Petra, Wadi Rum, the Red Sea, the Dead Sea, and the many fascinating places in between.

Begin in Amman, the modern capital of Jordan. During flexible private touring, visit the hilltop Citadel to see the ruins of the Temple of Hercules, the eighth-century Umayyad Palace complex and the archaeological museum. Take in views over the ancient Roman Theater and surrounding neighborhoods far below. In the nearby Downtown area, explore the lively souks, and visit the best local shops to browse for quality Jordanian crafts and treats.

Next, take a private excursion into the verdant hills of northern Jordan to tour Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the Middle East. See highlights such as Hadrian’s Arch, the Oval Plaza, the Hippodrome, the theater and the Cardo, a colonnaded stone street once lined with shops. Also enjoy a homemade lunch of traditional Jordanian dishes prepared by local women.

Then, travel along the King’s Highway, a historic route that passes through many fascinating cultural and natural attractions. During flexible private touring en route, visit Mount Nebo and the Memorial Church of Moses to see exquisite Byzantine mosaics and panoramic views stretching down to the Dead Sea. Perhaps also browse local mosaic workshops. Next, stop in Madaba to see the fascinating sixth-century mosaic map of the Holy Land, as well as the mosaics in the Madaba Archaeological Park. Enjoy a lunch of traditional Jordanian cuisine at a local restaurant. If desired, also participate in a private cultural activity such as henna painting or writing Arabic calligraphy. Continue through Wadi Mujib, a dramatic desert canyon, and stop at impressive Kerak Castle, a 12th-century Crusader fortress perched on a hill. Other options include seeing Shobak Castle, another Crusader fort in the countryside, and taking in breathtaking views over the hills and canyons of Dana Biosphere Reserve.

Continue to spectacular Petra, a vast archaeological complex carved into beautiful red sandstone mountains in the desert. With your private guide, explore the highlights of this ancient Nabataean city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the atmospheric Siq (gorge), and see the iconic Treasury and the impressive Royal Tombs. If desired and time permitting, venture to more challenging parts of the site such as the Monastery or the High Place of Sacrifice for unforgettable views over Petra. In the evening, opt for a memorable Petra by Night experience, including the opportunity to see the Siq and Treasury illuminated by hundreds of candles. Also visit Little Petra, another desert canyon with Nabataean ruins. Upon request, Artisans of Leisure can arrange the Back Door to Petra hike.

Next, venture into the wilds of legendary Wadi Rum, a UNESCO-inscribed landscape of monumental stone mountains and shifting red sand dunes that was used as a location in Lawrence of Arabia and other films. Stay overnight in a Bedouin-style desert camp with outstanding views, and explore Wadi Rum’s wonderland of rock outcroppings, narrow canyons, stone bridges, sand dunes and petroglyphs.

Then, visit Aqaba, a port city and popular resort area on the edge of the Red Sea. During private touring, visit local souks and historic sites such as the Aqaba Fort. One day, enjoy a private charter boat cruise on the crystal-clear waters of the Red Sea, including the option for snorkeling or scuba diving over colorful coral reefs and wrecks.

Continue to a luxurious resort overlooking the beautiful and mysterious Dead Sea. During ample leisure time, enjoy the lavish facilities, which spread over acres of lush grounds and include a 100,000-square-foot spa, multiple swimming pools and several restaurants. The private beach provides access to the Dead Sea, in which you can float in the mineral-rich water famous for its buoyancy and therapeutic qualities.
