Must Visit: Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark
Located along the peaceful coastline north of Copenhagen, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art is one of our favorite museums in Scandinavia and a highlight of the region.
Named for the three wives of the estate’s 19th-century owner (all named Louise), the museum comprises a beautiful sculpture park, galleries displaying modern and contemporary American and European art, an upscale boutique featuring Scandinavian design items, and a wonderful cafe with views across the water to Sweden.
After exploring the extensive grounds and seeing the many installations and exhibits, we recommend enjoying a carefully composed smorrebrod (open-faced sandwich), one of Denmark’s culinary specialties, in the cafe.
Louisiana is included in our private Denmark tours as an excursion from Copenhagen. The museum’s location makes it ideal for combining with nearby sites such as the Karen Blixen Museum, former home of the renowned Danish author also known as Isak Dinesen, and the magnificent 17th-century Frederiksborg Castle.
