The Best Luxury Hotels in Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon, the vibrant capital of Portugal, is known for its rich history, colorful neighborhoods, fantastic cuisine, beautiful architecture and stylish luxury hotels that reflect the city’s strong cultural heritage. Artisans of Leisure’s private Lisbon tours include accommodation at the city’s top luxury hotels. Some of our favorite luxury hotels in Lisbon include:

1. Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon

Constructed in the 1950s as the city’s original luxury hotel, the mid-century landmark Hotel Ritz set the precedent for modern, luxurious accommodations in the capital. Now the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon, the hotel continues the tradition of offering travelers an elegant, luxurious retreat overlooking Parque Eduardo VII.

It’s known for impeccable service, luxurious amenities, and an impressive private art collection of mid-twentieth-century Portuguese art, including tapestries, sculptures, and paintings.

The gilded interiors feature ornate furnishings, white marble and sparkling chandeliers.

The superb dining options include the Michelin-starred Cura, the classic Varanda Restaurant overlooking the park, a Japanese restaurant, a casual poolside restaurant serving Mediterranean cuisine and the sophisticated Ritz Bar.

Other highlights include one of the best spas in the city and a state-of-the-art gym with a rooftop running track.

2. Bairro Alto Hotel

One of our favorite Lisbon hotels is the Bairro Alto Hotel, a stylish hotel on the border of the Chiado and Bairro Alto neighborhoods. Located near some of the best shops, cafes and restaurants, the hotel is an ideal base for private city touring.

The contemporary decor features vintage furniture, pops of rich colors and crafts by Portuguese artisans.

A highlight is the signature restaurant helmed by renowned chef Nuno Mendes and the adjacent terrace with panoramic views of the Tagus River.

Other facilities include 18.68, a sophisticated cocktail bar and Pastelaria, a pastry shop, a gym and a spa.

3. Palacio Ludovice Wine Experience Hotel

A reflection of Lisbon’s old-meets-new dynamism, Palacio Ludovice is one of the city’s latest luxury hotel openings, effortlessly blending history and contemporary luxury.

Located in fashionable Bairro Alto, the yellow-hued palace was one of the few buildings in the district to survive the 1755 earthquake that leveled much of the city, making it a wonderful evocation of historic Lisbon.

Stylish interiors have been sensitively restored to preserve original 18th-century tiles, frescoes and stuccowork.

Rooms feature customized furnishings, decor by Portuguese artisans, luxurious linens, and large windows that create airy spaces and offer incredible views over Lisbon.

Wine is a focus here, and the restaurant and bar feature wine from every Portuguese wine region and offer daily sommelier-led tastings.

The theme continues with the Caudalie Boutique spa that specializes in vinotherapy treatments with grape-infused products.

4. Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel

In an exclusive neighborhood on the outskirts of Lisbon, Olissippo Lapa Palace Hotel is located in a historic 19th-century palace with expansive gardens and grand interiors.

Highlights of the elegant property, which has been open as a hotel since 1922, include the lush gardens and views of the Tagus River, sophisticated dining, a spa with an impressive list of treatments and interiors that feature original antiques, stained glass and specially commissioned furniture and tiles by renowned Portuguese ceramicist Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro.

The rooms and suites are spread across three wings and are decorated to evoke Portuguese styles from various eras. For instance, the Palace Wing has more traditional rooms, while the Garden Wing features more modern updates.

Many of our travelers combine time in Lisbon with private day excursions to the seaside resort town of Cascais on the Portuguese Riviera and the gardens and palaces of Sintra. For anyone wanting extra time to explore the towns and their environs or enjoy a round of golf at the iconic Oitavos Dunes course, we arrange accommodation at the best luxury hotels and resorts in Cascais and Sintra.

One of our favorite Sintra resorts is Penha Longa Resort, a luxurious complex set in a nature reserve only moments from the town.

Penha Longa combines historic architecture with contemporary facilities. Highlights include the large spa and wellness center and the championship golf course.

One of our favorite hotels in Cascais is The Albatroz Hotel, a beautifully restored historic villa beside the sea with a gastronomic restaurant.
