The Iconic Reichstag in Berlin, Germany
One of the most well-known landmarks in Berlin, Germany, is the modern glass-and-steel dome atop the Reichstag building, the seat of the German parliament. Artisans of Leisure arranges for travelers on our private Berlin tours to visit the Reichstag dome for a unique insight into the city’s history and architecture, including the incredible panoramic views from the rooftop observation deck.
Designed by British architect Norman Foster and completed in 1999, the dome rises directly above the debating chamber of the Bundestag (the German federal parliament), symbolizing Germany’s commitment to transparency in the democratic process.
Foster also took charge of the overall renovation of the Reichstag building, preserving the 19th-century facade while updating the interiors and installing energy-efficient measures like solar panels.
The glass dome adds an unexpected element of lightness and modernity to the solemn and classical original structure, creating a unique blend of historic architecture and modern design.
The design of the dome also marks a progressive move towards sustainability as it provides an energy-efficient source of lighting and ventilation with thousands of glass panels, flooding the debating chamber below with daylight reflected off a mirrored cone. A sun shield electronically monitors the sun’s movement throughout the day and moves on a circular track to prevent the parliamentary chamber from becoming too bright or too hot (in winter, it helps trap heat).
Upon arrival, visitors are ushered through a security checkpoint before ascending to the base of the dome via a dedicated elevator. While exploring the interior with an expert local guide, our travelers learn about its architectural significance as well as the history of the Reichstag, including during the Weimar Republic, the Nazi era and the Cold War.
Visitors can ascend to the top of the dome by waking up one of the spiraling steel ramps—one is for the ascent, one is for the descent—which afford 360-degree views of Berlin during the climb.
The top of the dome is open to the elements and has a sculptural-looking ventilation funnel.
A viewing platform and rooftop terrace provide a magnificent birds-eye view of the city, including landmarks like the Brandenburg Gate and the Tiergarten.
Evening tours of the dome are particularly atmospheric, with the illuminated architectural details and the cityscape lights below.
We recommend having a meal at the Kafer Dachgarten Restaurant, the rooftop restaurant adjacent to the iconic glass dome.
A minimalist contemporary space with floor-to-ceiling windows that maximize the views of the city, it’s a great stop for lunch or afternoon tea.
