A Private Tour of the Beautiful and Historic Interiors at Casa Aliaga in Lima, Peru
Casa Aliaga, a historic mansion in Lima, Peru, is an architectural gem that offers travelers a glimpse of Peru’s colonial heritage. Built in 1535 by the Spanish conquistador Jeronimo de Aliaga y Ramirez, it is home to the 18th generation of the Aliaga family, making it one of the oldest continuously inhabited private residences in the Americas.
Located just off Plaza Mayor (also called Plaza de Armas) in Lima’s UNESCO-listed historic center, Casa Aliaga is an elegant and evocative time capsule of the city’s past.
Casa Aliaga is known for its well-preserved architecture and interiors that blend elements of Spanish colonial style with Peruvian indigenous cultural motifs seen in the intricate woodcarving throughout the house.
Rebuilt after the 1746 earthquake that leveled much of Lima, the house today is an eclectic combination of styles that reflects the fashions and modifications of successive generations of the Aliaga family.
A monumental staircase leads visitors away from the bustle of the streets and up to elegant reception rooms filled with antiques and artifacts.
The Salon de los Azulejos, an ornate living room adorned in 17th-century Spanish tiles, displays a portrait of Jeronimo de Aliaga and his conquistador sword from Spain.
Colorful rooms throughout the primary floor showcase the art and antiques family members have collected over the years.
A modern event space below the street level incorporates original pre-Columbian walls from the huaca (an Inca ritual site) over which the house was built.
Highlights of privately touring the house include the private family chapel and a large sitting room featuring gilt mirrors, antique Louis XIV furniture, Japanese vases and portraits of the family.
One of the most notable spaces is the Seville-style courtyard with a Ficus tree and a 19th-century fountain in the center.
The second-story gallery with carved wooden balconies features colorful glazed tiles from Seville and paintings from the Cusco School interspersed with family portraits.
Casa Aliaga is open for visits by appointment only, which Artisans of Leisure arranges for travelers on our private Peru tours. Upon request, we can arrange an exclusive private tour with a member of the Aliaga family or a special meal in the dining room.
With its location in the heart of Lima’s historic center, Casa Aliaga combines well with privately touring nearby historic sites, notable museums and other heritage homes.
