Ancient Greek Ruins in the Valley of the Temples, Sicily

A highlight of Sicily is touring the ancient Greek ruins in the Valley of the Temples, a spectacular UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Valley of the TemplesSprawling across 3,000 acres on a plateau just outside Agrigento, the Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi) is one of the largest and most significant archaeological sites in the Mediterranean.

Founded in 582 BC as a Greek colony, Akragas (now Agrigento) was one of the most powerful cities in the ancient world, with a large population and a flourishing economy. The magnificent structures that dot the landscape reflect the city’s prosperous past as a significant center of trade and cultural exchange in the Mediterranean. Today, the Valley of the Temples is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its incredible architectural remains of the ancient city, including Doric temples that are renowned as among the best-preserved examples outside of Greece.

We arrange private tours of the highlights with a local expert guide, including seeing the most significant temples, such as the Temple of Concordia, whose incredibly well-preserved architecture is the inspiration for UNESCO’s logo.

Lying on the ground in front of the Temple of Concordia is bronze statue of Fallen Icarus, a striking modern art installation by Polish sculptor Igor Mitoraj that represents the character from Greek mythology.

Other significant highlights include the Temple of Juno, whose hilltop location offers beautiful views of the Mediterranean, the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of the Dioscuri (Castor and Pollux), considered to be among the most magnificent Doric temples in the world. We also take interested travelers to visit the impressive Archaeological Museum and the historic, picturesque Kolymbetra Garden.

Upon request, Artisans of Leisure can arrange exclusive meals in a private citrus orchard in the Valley of the Temples archaeological zone.

The tranquil, fragrant orange grove in proximity to the renowned Greek temples makes an idyllic and unique setting for enjoying regional specialties.

The meals feature Sicilian dishes such as vegetables and nuts from the site, as well as homemade cheese and olive oil produced from the ancient olive trees in the park.

We can also arrange dinner reservations at restaurants that overlook the illuminated ruins in the evening.
