Luang Prabang, Siem Reap (Angkor)
This private luxury tour combines two of Southeast Asia’s most interesting cities: Luang Prabang, a small city brimming with culture, Buddhist monasteries and temples, and Siem Reap, the cultural heart of Cambodia and home of the remarkable Angkor Wat.
Begin in Luang Prabang, an enchanting, UNESCO World Heritage-listed town along the Mekong River. Stay at Amantaka, an exclusive luxury resort in the historic center, or Rosewood Luang Prabang, a romantic luxury resort built along a stream in the forested hills outside town. During private touring, walk through streets lined with a unique blend of traditional Lao and French colonial architecture. Visit landmarks such as the National Museum and Wat Xieng Thong, an important Buddhist temple. Explore local markets, and browse for handwoven silk and cotton textiles and other items. One morning, visit a local farm and enjoy a cooking class. One day, take a memorable cruise on the Mekong River to visit riverside craft villages and the Pak Ou Caves, an important Buddhist pilgrimage site. Another day, visit an elephant sanctuary. If desired, also rise early to give alms to local Buddhist monks during their dawn procession, and learn more about Buddhism’s central role in Lao culture.
Upon request, Artisans of Leisure can incorporate additional activities into this tour, such as hiking, biking, kayaking, jungle excursions, a visit to a private home, photography excursions and more.
Next, fly to Siem Reap to explore incredible Angkor, the wondrous ruins of the ancient Khmer empire. With your private guide, tour the most interesting parts of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, including Angkor Wat, an enormous temple city built as a model of the Hindu universe in stone; Angkor Thom, an ancient capital filled with iconic sites such as the Bayon, Terrace of the Elephants and Terrace of the Leper King; Ta Prohm, a temple being devoured by the jungle; and serene Preah Khan, a former monastery and school. Also visit Banteay Srei, a petite temple with elaborate carvings in pink sandstone, and other lesser-known temples. One day, visit more remote temples or enjoy an excursion to Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake and an ecological wonder. Enjoy a boat cruise among the lake's floating villages, markets and gardens. Also cruise through the flooded forest to learn about the Tonle Sap ecosystem and spot birds and other wildlife.
If desired, enjoy special activities customized to your interests, such as riding bikes to temples and local villages, a private Khmer cooking class, a monk's blessing at a local pagoda, visiting children's centers, touring local villages, photography excursions, visiting traditional Cambodian art centers, specialized shopping, private yoga, a helicopter ride to remote jungle temples, or attending traditional Khmer dance performances.
