This is the ultimate private Rwanda tour. It includes the most incredible wildlife experiences in the most beautiful national parks in the country, such as gorilla trekking, chimp trekking, and Big Five game drives, as well as private helicopter transfers and time to relax at beautiful luxury lodges overlooking lakes, tea plantations and native forest.
Begin in Kigali, Rwanda’s vibrant capital. During flexible private touring, visit local markets and galleries, and tour the sobering Kigali Genocide Memorial, a museum dedicated to the horrific 1994 Rwandan genocide. Other options include a Rwandan coffee tasting, a culinary tour or cooking lesson, and visits to local fashion designers and boutiques.
Next, visit Akagera National Park, a beautiful expanse of savanna, wetlands, lakes and hills in eastern Rwanda. Stay at a luxurious safari lodge on the banks of Lake Rwanyakazinga. During unforgettable game drives look for rhinos and other members of the Big Five—lions, leopards, elephants and Cape buffaloes—as well as zebras, giraffes, baboons and various antelope species. Also spot some of the 400-plus bird species living in the area. If desired, enjoy a water safari on the lake to look for hippos, crocodiles and land mammals coming to the water to drink.
Continue to Nyungwe Forest National Park, a lush and biologically diverse montane rainforest, and stay at the luxurious One&Only Nyungwe House. During flexible touring, enjoy hikes on a suspension bridge in the forest canopy, trekking to see chimpanzees and colobus monkeys, and lessons in archery and spear throwing. Another option is a birding excursion to search for some of the hundreds of bird species inhabiting the beautiful forest. Upon request, Artisans of Leisure can also arrange tea touring and tastings in one of the tea plantations just outside the national park.
Next, transfer by private helicopter to Volcanoes National Park, a spectacular landscape of volcanic peaks in the Virunga Mountains that’s the natural habitat of mountain gorillas and was the base for celebrated gorilla researcher Dian Fossey. Stay in a lodge with views of the beautiful volcanoes and surrounding countryside. Track gorilla families during morning hikes, and perhaps also glimpse golden monkeys and other native species. During leisure time, enjoy activities such as visiting a local community, seeing a nursery used in reforestation projects, going on birding walks, hiking in the mountains and visiting Dian Fossey’s research camp.
Return by private helicopter to Kigali, where you will be assisted to your international flight.
Upon request, we can further customize this private Rwanda tour to include scenic helicopter flights, philanthropic activities and private dining experiences. This tour can also be incorporated into a multicountry tour that combines destinations elsewhere in Africa or Europe.
