Food, Wine & Architecture of Spain

14 Days - Departs Daily on a Private Basis)
Barcelona, Madrid, Ribera del Duero, La Rioja, San Sebastian & Bilbao

This tour is dedicated to the superlative food, wine, art and architecture of Spain, focusing on the areas most renowned for their art and gastronomy: Barcelona, Madrid, Ribera del Duero and the Basque Country.

Begin in Barcelona, the capital of the Catalonia region and a center of modern design and cutting-edge cuisine. During comprehensive private touring, discover Gaudi’s fantastical structures such as Sagrada Familia, Casa Mila, Casa Batllo and Parc Guell. Visit excellent museums such as the Picasso Museum or Miro Museum. Stroll along Las Ramblas—Barcelona’s most famous boulevard—and explore the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter and La Ribera. If desired, browse upscale boutiques along the broad Passeig de Gracia and design shops in the stylish Born and Raval neighborhoods. Also visit leading food markets, including the Santa Caterina Market and La Boqueria Market. One day, enjoy a cooking lesson to learn to prepare regional dishes. Another day, enjoy wine tastings in the renowned Penedes or Priorat wine region.

Continue by high-speed train to Madrid, the Spanish capital, which has elegant squares, stately Habsburg architecture, leafy boulevards and superb museums. During flexible private art touring, visit a number of world-class museums and galleries, according to your preferences, such as the masterpieces of the Prado Museum, Reina Sofia National Museum and Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, as well as CaixaForum and art-filled churches. Also tour the majestic Royal Palace. Stroll through exclusive shopping and residential districts. Also visit historic squares and lively markets, including the gourmet San Miguel Market. One evening, enjoy a private tasting tour of some of Madrid’s most beloved tapas bars. Upon request, additional experiences can be arranged such as tickets to soccer games and bullfights, preferred seats at zarzuela performances, cooking lessons, garden tours, and visits to house-museums such as Museo Cerralbo or Museo Sorolla.

Next, explore charming Segovia, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to see its ancient Roman aqueduct, Gothic cathedral, atmospheric backstreets and fairy-tale Alcazar castle, which perches on a rocky outcrop. Enjoy time for lunch of local specialties at a top restaurant.

Continue by private transfer to Ribera del Duero for a stay at Abadia Retuerta LeDomaine, one of the best luxury hotels in Spain. During a private tour of the estate, explore the beautiful grounds and excellent winery. Also, visit other wineries and villages in the area, and enjoy the hotel’s beautiful interiors, renowned restaurants and extensive leisure facilities.

Next, you will be transferred to La Rioja, one of the world’s most renowned wine regions. Spend a night at Hotel Marques de Riscal, a luxury hotel with distinctive architecture designed by Frank Gehry. En route, tour vineyards, enjoy wine tastings at some of Spain’s top bodegas (wineries), and see outstanding winery buildings designed by celebrated contemporary architects such as Santiago Calatrava and Zaha Hadid.

Continue to San Sebastian, an elegant seaside resort that’s the gastronomic capital of the Basque Country and home of some of the finest cuisine in the world. With your private guide, tour the picturesque old town and enjoy a private tasting tour to try the city’s best pintxos—the Basque version of tapas—and Txakoli, an effervescent white wine. Also enjoy a private tour of a local market followed by a cooking lesson at a private gastronomic society. One day, take a private excursion to Bilbao, a city renowned for contemporary architecture.
